Hilo Fuchs

Hilo Fuchs and Xie Aige - A Feminine World in Clay and on Paper
It almost seems to have been destiny that the both artists have met. The central theme in both artists’ worlds is women, and both predominately work with clay. Hilo and Xie Aige established an immediate rapport and synergies in working together in Xie Aige’s studio. The outcome of this work can now be seen in an exhibition at the German Consulate.
The juxtaposition of the two differing cultures is of particular interest, as is the resulting synergy of the co-operation between the two artists. The human factor plays a big role. It is not only the economic co-operation between the two countries which is of importance but also the cultural and personal exchanges between its people to foster understanding.
Xie Aiges work echoes the quest for spirituality, harmony and tranquility spanning over centuries. Her contemplative figures exist in spheres free of time and space, invite for meditation and thus create a contrast to our fast living present time.
Hilos figures, however, live in the Here and Now. They interact with the presence in their many expressions, be they mocking, frivolous, daring or curious. They are figures of today, looking for happiness in a complex world and invite a bemused reflection of modern life.
The exhibition Hilo Fuchs and Xie Aige - A Feminine World in Clay and on Paper, takes place at the German Consulate General Shanghai, 181 Yongfu Lu (near the Shanghai Library).
